The Role of Nano TiO2 on Sintering and Properties of Gelcasted Alumina Ceramics

Abstract:
The sinterability of gelcasted TiOsub>2-doped alumina ceramics (0.54.0 mass-%) was studied up to 1600 °C. The physical properties (bulk density and apparent porosity), phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties (microhardness and toughness) were also investigated. The results revealed that TiOsub>2 is a beneficial additive, resulting in lower sintering temperature. The grain growth is shown to be enhanced simultaneously after addition of 2 mass-% TiOsub>2. At higher addition content of TiOsub>2 (4 mass-%) and higher sintering temperature (1600 °C), the formation of secondary phase Alsub>2TiOsub>5, which has a lower elastic modulus compared with alumina, reduces the hardness of the sintered ceramic from 18.4 to 16.5 GPa. On the other hand, the fracture toughness is affected by the grain growth.
